At Conscium, we are dedicated to exploring the profound connections between consciousness and artificial intelligence, guided by Dr. Mark Solms, a leading neuropsychologist and expert in the field of consciousness studies. This mission took center stage at the Freud Study Day during the Cheltenham Literature Festival, where Dr. Ted Lappas, a founding member of Conscium, joined Dr. Solms for one of the event’s most anticipated sessions.
Dr. Solms, who has spent the past 29 years editing and updating The Revised Standard Edition of The Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud, captivated the audience with his insights. In their joint session, titled “Id, Robot,” he and Dr. Ted Lappas, delved into the ongoing relevance of Freud’s work in today’s technology-driven world. They invited the audience to consider how Freud’s insights into the unconscious mind may serve as a foundational framework for understanding AI, particularly in the quest to safely understand and prepare for artificial consciousness.
The session sparked vibrant discussions and addressed multiple key questions from an engaged audience. These included whether AI could ever possess something akin to an unconscious in the Freudian sense, what safeguards might be necessary as AI consciousness emerges, and how psychoanalytic principles and insights might apply to AI both as a tool for therapy and as an entity that could itself require psychological evaluation and care.
The thought-provoking dialogue underscored how Freud’s work remains deeply relevant as we navigate the future of AI and artificial consciousness.
